Castelnuovo di Magra Map & Travel Guide

Explore a Lunigiana Hill Town between Fosdinovo and Carrara

Castelnuovo di Magra is a village of about 800 people between Fosdinovo and Carrara in Liguria, near the border of Tuscany. It is a compact hill town with fantastic views, en enoteca and fine restaurant. It makes a fine base for exploring the Lunigiana.

Castelnuovo di Magra is near Sarzana, an interesting inland Ligurian city with fine restaurants and a great medieval festival. Fosdinovo, in the Lunigiana, is also worth a visit.

In Castelnuovo di Magra you'll find an interesting Enoteca in Castelnuovo, Enoteca Regionale della Liguria, devoted to the wines of the Colli di Luni, or hills of Luni, a Roman outpost in Liguria for which the Lunigiana was named.

Allthough small, Castelnuovo di Magra has a very fine restaurant called Trattoria Armanda located in Piazza Garibaldi on the southern end of town (read a review). The ruins of the castle are on the opposite end of town, as you can see in the map.

Where to Stay

In recent times the number of places to stay in the Lunigiana has increased enormously, especially vacation rentals. There are quite a few places in town, like the B&b Peverello or the highly rated apartment Vento di Luna. Others, like Nel Giardino Degli Ulivi are scattered about the mountainous countryside.
