Hallstatt is a UNESCO World Heritage site located in the Salzkammergut region in Austria near Lake Hallstatt (Hallstätter See).
The Hallstatt map includes the village of Obertraun. You can walk or take the train (see a rail map of Austria) between the two villages. The map has suggested lodging and attraction markers. Zoom in to separate them.
Hallstatt, Austria Travel Toolbox
Hallstatt is a very interesting place to see. You could easily spend three days or more here. You have a very scenic and historic village, lots of caves and mines to explore, and many well-marked walking paths. Many Europeans come here to trek (or ski in winter). You can take a boat ride on the lake. Unless you elect to walk, you get from the train station to Hallstatt via a boat crossing the lake. Boat routes are shown on the map as thin blue lines on the lake.
On the map to the northeast you'll see Bad Ausee, near the Altaussee Salt Mine, which became a "mountain of treasures" when Nazis stored more than 6,500 paintings and cultural objects. You can visit the site.
Also marked on the map is the tram that will carry you up to the salt mines and the area which was once an iron age cemetery. Archaeologists have erected some experimental facilities based on their excavations. In one, preserving pigs by salting, 150 at a time, has been tested to see if iron age folks could conduct such a large enterprise.
The salt mines, "Salzwelten" or "Salt Worlds", is the top attraction in Hallstatt. You'll find out how salt is mined, see ancient tools and the eerily preserved "Man in Salt", a corpse preserved in salt was discovered right in a salt deposit.
There are ice caves near Obertraun. In summer concerts are held inside.
Where to Stay
There are a couple of hotels marked on the map with links you can use to reserve or just check them out.
Heritage Hotel Hallstatt is an awesome place to stay right at the end of the main street in town. It has a good restaurant and spectacular views over the lake.
Seehotel Grüner Baum has a sun terrace overlooking the lake and a fine restaurant as well.
